When presenter Preston Sturges introduced Herman J. Mankiewicz and Orson Welles because the joint winners of the 1942 Academy Award for Citizen Kane’s screenplay, neither man was current on the high-profile occasion. Instead, RKO Radio president George Schaefer accepted the award on their behalf, explaining that Mankiewicz had known as him earlier the identical day to request he take his place. Despite receiving a complete of 9 Oscar nominations, that was the only real award Welles’ magnum opus would obtain that night, and in keeping with the New Yorker, the viewers at Los Angeles’ Biltmore Hotel even jeered at each Citizen Kane point out throughout the ceremony.
